Words from the Road! 01 April 2007
Hi To all From the Long and Winding Road! What a great couple of weeks this has been. We have met some great people and have seen some very beautiful country! The kindness, respect, and generosity of the Native American people across Arizona & Utah has been outstanding! Last Thursday, I was honored to share 6.5 miles with a Navajo man named James Sampson, US Army Sgt, and Viet Nam Vet.....every day is a good day, but this day was exceptional. We met his daughter the previous night in a local restaurant, but of course, we didn't know her or her dad, coincidence? I don't think so... The next morning Kelley was driving the support vehicle, and I was walking south of Bluff, UT headed for town. We got a lot of waves that day, and some people stopped to see what we were up to. About 6 miles from town a car pulled over and I immediately recognized Tsonja, our waitress from the night before. She got out and introduced her dad and he asked if he could walk with me and of course I said, 'yes'. Mr. Sampson absolutely made my day an exceptional day! He spoke of his life and his time with the US Army in Nam, told me a couple of funny stories, and we both talked about current events, and what we we do if one of us were President. We laughed a lot about that! James travels around AZ, & UT and other areas of the West to do Healing/Prayer Cermonies for military headed overseas and for military members returning home. It's a Navajo tradition for the Warriors to receive this healing prayer. Anyway to James & daughter Tsonja, the time we spent with you will be with us forever, till we meet again! Gretchen & Kelley
