About 'Run 4 Chance'

The 'Run 4 Chance' website serves as the primary platform for the Chance Phelps Foundation: a nonprofit organization started in 2004. Initially, a group of friends and family to Lance Corporal Chance R. Phelps decided to run the 29th Annual Marine Corp Marathon, held in Washington D.C. Our group ran this marathon as a tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by LCpl Phelps on 09 April 2004, when he was killed by enemy small arms fire in the Anbar province on Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Our group, prior to running the marathon, decided to seek sponsors for our first event. We asked people we knew to sponsor our team for $1 a mile for the duration of the run (26.2 miles.) It was entirely successful and the Chance Phelps Foundation was born.

Through the donations of our sponsors, the Chance Phelps Foundation was able to purchase much needed binoculars for service members currently serving in Iraq. These binoculars were produced by Brunton and bore a special engraving as a tribute to LCpl Phelps.

Now, our group participates in, and creates, regular events around the world and continues to raise money for donations to various charities that support quality of life issues, particularly for those that are serving, or have served, in Operation Iraqi Freedom / Operation Enduring Freedom.

Through this web site and the charities we support, we hope that people will never forget the sacrifices of people like LCpl Chance Phelps.
