Greetings from beautiful Western Colorado! I read your story in our local paper and had to write. As a single mother, I was not prepared for the sense of overwhelming pride to see my son become a success story with the USMC. I cannot fathom the grief you must feel to have lost a son and brother. Perhaps the knowledge that this was the path he chose, he gave the ultimate sacrifice that so many others can remain free. My son, LCpl Tyler Long, 1st Bn 12th MAR B BTRY, 19 was just deployed to Al Asad 3 weeks ago. For those of us left behind, we are comforted by the strength of websites like this, stories of Chance, the bond of Marine families. The two of you are incredible women, truly inspirational, fine parallels of the dedication Chance must have felt every one of his days of deployment. Strong evidence of a strong family, the epitome of a Marine. Semper fidelis....

As an old Marine (Vietnam Era)I grieve for your loss. He is a brother
because he belongs to (I think) the MOST exclusive Organization on Earth.
The USMC. I know you are proud as can be of Chance and know that every
Marine on the planet feels the same. The Corps gave me the values and self
confidence to become an Airline Captain and it gave him the courage and
understanding of what really counts in this life and he demonstrated that
by his actions. I'm not rich now but I sure want to help out a little
more. God bless you for what you are doing and for producing America's
finest.

PS:
I have several pavers (on the walk)at the Fallen Hero's in San Antonio and
needless to say I have given to the Fisher House and Semper Fi funds.
Well, now I'll make an extra contribution in honor of your special Marine.
Believe me when I tell you he is in "outstanding" company now with the
heros of Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Okinawa and the many other places we Marines
hold as hallowed ground. God bless you and all you are doing. I'm 66 now
and wish to God I could do more. My nephew, who I am so very proud to say
followed in my footsteps and is now commanding his own USMC F/A-18 Hornet
squadron (VMFA 212-the Lancers)after TWO tours in Iraq flying close Air
Support for our ground Marines out of Al Assad Marine base 120 miles WNW
of Baghdad. He takes over command in Iwakuni japan patroling the North
Korean Coast now. Sorry I blabbed so much but I just get all wound up when

and was attached to 2/4 Marines, the Magnificent Bastard's. I remember
reading the story written by the Marine who escorted Chance home. I was
so touched I couldn't stop crying. When my Marine came home that
September I passed the article onto him and he was moved too. His unit
suffered the highest casualities of the war during the month of April,
2004 so that story could have been about one of his teammates as well.
You have chosen to show your pride and love for your son in a very special

be overwhelming at times. As a mother my heart goes out to you and yours.

We first heard about Chance through a friend of mine who (at the time)
worked in Public Affairs at 29 Palms. She knew Chance's escort, and
knowing that my husband (also a Marine) was from Pavillion and his aunt
and uncle lived in Dubois, forwarded us a copy of the story.
Understanding that the Marine Corps is a brotherhood of sorts, my husband
and I mourn him.
My husband's aunt is buried in the same cemetary as Chance, just a few
steps away. When we visited the cemetary over Memorial Day Weekend, 2004
we also paid our repects to Chance as well, and to thank him for his
service to our country. He is a hero!
I just found out about the Run4Chance, and we hope to make it to Dubois
for the homecoming.
Gob Bless you and may He grant you safe travels on your journey.

Comments: God bless you and your son. I, like you, can't stand any anti-war
rally and what these people stand for. I think it's a gross insult to ALL
Americans that people protest against the war because it impugns everyone
who risks their lives to serve in our military. We all enjoy the freedoms
we have because of brave people like your son. I honor him, you and every
other individual who commits their lives to serve. Some people pay a very
dear price for this honor for which I am humbled and eternally grateful. I
pledge to continue to rebuke the forces that decry our military from the
loudmouth elected leaders who've gotten my phone calls to cretins on the

that was written about Chance. It brought tears to my eyes. It was a very
moving tribute to this MARINE. God Bless You.

Semper Fi, Brother! Marine, you are one of the many GREAT reasons
our Marine Corps will live on as the Worlds Finest Warriors. You gave your
life to Corps and Country without being asked and you did it saving your
fellow Marines. There is no greater calling then that.
You are a hero in my book, Chance!
To the family,
I am so sorry for your lose. I wish there were words to share that could
ease your pain in anyway, but I know of none. Thank You for giving the
Marine Corps Chance, thus giving everyone in this Country the gift of
Freedom!

I didn't know Chance as well as I knew Kelley. What I do remember
of him was laughter and a kid that I liked. I attended Chance's funeral. Not because it was the thing the community was doing, but because I truly mourned for you and your families. I mourned the loss of a young person who was ripped from his family and
community abruptly and perhaps to soon. If it helps any, I feel that every person is put on this earth to achieve a goal. It may be something insignifigant, or it may be something tremendous like saving other people's lives. Luckily for Chance, he was able to attain that goal and advance to a higher calling. I know it hurts, but with his death Chance has achieved many goals. He saved peoples' lives, AND his death influenced Gretchen and Kelley to begin the Run4Chance program. Which does so much for Marines and their families.
Take care and I'll see you soon.

I am from Dubois, Wy and knew Chance when he was small. Those
dimples will never leave my mind, especially when they were accompanied by
a sheepish grin when him and my brother were doing something they
shouldn't. But Chance always had good values and would leave a situation
where good sense wasn't being used. I also remember when I heard about
Chance. It was like someone knocked all the air out of my lungs as well,
my brother was unusualy talkative telling my Mom and I stories of college,
and my Mom pulled the car over so we could all have a good cry. After I
shared the news, my brother was even more quiet than usual. Now my
brother is in a situation where he can use all the help he can get, and I
know that Chance is there by his side not letting him give up a major
fight and battle. That's the kind of guy that Chance is/was and we all
miss him. I can't believe it's been almost 3 years. The Phelps, Mack,
and Orndoff famalies are amazingly strong, thank you for that strength it
helps me when I feel weak. I just think of how strong Kelley was when she
came home that time, and it helps me now.

It's been just over a year since I heard the news from back home. A phone call anyone would not want to receive, let alone a knock at your front door at 0200am. That someone you know has paid the ultimate sacrifice as a warrior, as a Marine serving his country. At least once a week, I get on this web site, and look through it as a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice Chance paid for his Country, and for his unit. A year later, it's still hard to believe, and every time I read the article written by LtCol Strobl, it sinks in more that the war we are fighting hits closer to home every time. I had the opportunity of knowing Chance from back in my high school days in Palisade, and he was the real deal. I remember Ssgt. White, and Ssgt. Unselt always talking about him, and how he was getting ready to ship out. I also had the honor to know his friends that enlisted in the Marine Corps after his passing. They bring great honor to his memory, to his family, and to themselves, with unselfish devotion to their brother in arms, and keeping his memory alive. I can't express what this web-site means to those of us out there who had the pleasure of knowing Chance, and for his family keeping his esprit de corps alive for the rest of the world to help pass on his legacy. He is a hero, and as long as any Marine, or person who knew Chance is alive, his memory will never fade. To his family, thank you, and to his friends, my fellow Marines, keep Chance's spirit with you always, and remember his sacrifice. Semper Fidelis

Hello, I was sitting next to Chance when we were ambushed that day. The crew of our vehicle was Lcpl Smith, Sgt. Cooper, Chance, and myself. I'm very proud of what Chance did that day. I can honestly say that if it weren't for his actions that day and courage facing the enemy. I might not be able to sit and type this now. After we left the engagement area and were on our way back to the base to get the other casualties of the firefight to more definitive treatment than I could give them in the field, I held Chance's hand. I held his hand until we stopped our humvee and I had to see to the other wounded Marines. It was a hell of a day, and a hell of a fight, and I lost a friend. My deepest sympathy goes out to the family. It was a pleasure to meet you in person at the ball. If there's anying I can do to help, please email me. Semper Fidelis, HM2(FMF) Chad G. Peabody

We have known chance for a number of years and he called us Grandpa and Grandma. We love him with all our hearts and miss him. As Chance grew into a young man, we weren't in contact but we still thought of him and our prayers were always with him. We are so proud of him. I remember how excited he would get over small things and the enjoyment he had of life. I'm told he still had the "little bug" in the wood box we gave him and I remember his excitement over it. I also remember the night we sat up and talked till 2:00 in the morning after the first question he asked: "Do you believe in Angels". He had a lot more questions and spoke of his belief and told us why he knew he had a guardian angel. The next day he showed us how well he could ride his mini bike. Chance we miss you but we will see you someday, save a seat for us in heaven. Mom and Dad, you had a wonderful son you can remember with pride. Love, Grandpa and Grandma

The honor of being a Marine who fought and died for their country. Semper Fidelis to LCpl Chance who is now standing guard at Marine Barracks Heavens Gate. Semper Fi, Jerry

I lived in Calif. for over 18 years before moving here, and I too lived in Oceanside, so I know Pendleton real well.. When I read the story about Chance, I felt compelled to offer my sincere condolences. I too am a Vietnam Vet, two tours, and retired US Army...I share your loss...May God be with you at this time of sorrow, and always....

DEAR READERS, MY NAME IS GRETCHEN MACK. I AM PFC CHANCE R. PHELPS MOTHER. I HAVE READ THE COMMENTS POSTED HERE ON THIS SITE, AND WOULD LIKE TO CONTRIBUTE SOME THOUGHTS ALSO. EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT ON THE FRONT LINES EVERYDAY WITH THESE YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN, I WANT EVERYONE TO KNOW THAT WHETHER YOU SUPPORT THIS WAR ON TERROR OR NOT, I DO! AND OUR FAMILY DOES AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO... SUPPORT OF OUR TROOPS AND THEIR MISSION IS CRUCIAL AT THIS POINT IN TIME AND ALWAYS! I PERSONALLY HAVE HEARD FROM A FEW OF THE YOUNG MEN THAT KNEW MY SON CHANCE. THEY TOOK THE TIME TO CALL OR WRITE TO ME AND TELL ME THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THEM, EVEN THROUGH OUR LOSS WE STILL SUPPORT THEM IN THEIR EFFORT. I KNOW A FEW AMERICANS WHO DO NOT FEEL THIS WAY... MY MESSAGE TO YOU ALL IS THIS, "ALL OF OUR ARMED FORCES LAY IT ON THE LINE EACH EVERY DAY SO YOU CAN HAVE YOUR OWN OPINIONS AND FEEL FREE TO EXPRESS THEM." "THAT DOES NOT HAPPEN EVERY WHERE IN THE WORLD AS YOU ALL SHOULD KNOW." "FREEDOM IS NOT FREE!" DO YOU THINK TERRORISTS CONTEMPLATE "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS?" I DON'T THINK SO... WHAT THEY DO CARE ABOUT IS WIPING US OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH, BECAUSE WE ARE THE INFIDELS. MAYBE WE SHOULD STICK OUR HEADS IN THE SAND AND PRETEND THEY AREN'T THERE, HOW EFFECTIVE HAS THAT EVER BEEN? AMERICA NEEDS TO WAKE UP! SOME MEMBERS OF OUR FAMILY ARE GOING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE MARINE MARATHON IN D.C. THIS COMING OCTOBER. OUR GROUP IS Walking/Walking FOR CHANCE. I URGE ALL OF YOU WHO READ THIS TO SPONSOR A GROUP OR AN INDIVIDUAL IN THE MARATHON. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME WITH ANY COMMENTS! SEMPER FI! GRETCHEN MACK A PROUD MOTHER OF A FALLEN MARINE!

Thank you so much for honoring my son, the celebration of his life goes on. Maybe through the contributions, we can save some lives of our American troops. God bless you all and God bless America.
